Colbert Mashile walks us around his studio at August House, Johannesburg

ART AFRICA met with South African artist, Colbert Mashile, at his studio in the historic August House in downtown Johannesburg to discuss the symbolism in his work and his path as an internationally-acclaimed artist.

Mashile was born in 1972 in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Mashile started his academic career in Pretoria and later went on to complete a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand. Mashile has risen to fame, both nationally and internationally as his work infuses a natural and mystical sensibility, while combining them with his subjective historical background.
