First Title

Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz 2019, Mandla Mlangeni, will provide a musical journey as part of Oratorio of a Forgotten Youth: Musical Reflections on the Youth of ’76. A retrospective on the uprisings of 16 June 1976, the production intends to mark the 40th anniversary of these events through a musical and theatrical narrative.

Directed by Mandla Mbothwe, it features a cast of accomplished artists, such as musicians Afrika Mkhize, Lesego Rampolokeng, and Mark Fransman, and thespians Thembi Mtshali-Jones and Bo Petersen, amongst many others. Joining these artists are the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra as well as Mlangeni’s own Amandla Freedom Ensemble. Mandla Mlangeni’s residency is supported by the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Oratorio of a Forgotten Youth: Musical Reflections on the Youth of ’76, will take place at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town from 15 June 2019.

 

Mlangeni is 2019 NIHSS Artist in Residence at the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape.
