Paa Joe, the celebrated Ghanaian fantasy palanquin and coffin maker, is being honoured with an award by the Friends of African and African American Art (FAAA).The African Art Recognition Award is presented annually to an artist and ‘celebrates the artistic legacy of indigenous Africans and peoples of African Diaspora in the Americas’. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Paa Joe’s dedication to preserving the Ghanaian tradition of building fantasy coffins to honour the deceased.

FAAA is well known for its outstanding and innovative programs and events planned in conjunction with the Detroit Art Institute’s curatorial staff.  The award ceremony will take place at Detroit Art Institute on the 24th of September. On the 25th of September Paa Joe will present a lecture at Oberlin College, Ohio, on the history of the Ghanaian coffins. The movie, Paa Joe and The Lion, will be screened at the Milwaukee Art Museum on the 29th of September.
