Writing Art History Since 2002

First Title

The Spier Arts Academy offers employment-based training in professional mosaic. Apply now for 2014.

Based in Cape Town’s Innovation District – the Fringe – this three year, full-time apprenticeship focuses on mosaic art and includes tuition in drawing, art history and business skills – enabling apprentices to jumpstart their creative careers and run their own successful enterprises.

The employment-based training provides apprentices with the opportunity to work on real-world projects, collaborate with specially chosen artist and learn professional art practices by association – learning to scale, quantify and systematically manufacture large mosaic pieces over a period of time. The programme is designed to create a local industry with sustainable and meaningful employment for many hundreds, and perhaps even thousands of skilled mosaic artists.

Working against production deadlines requires the studio to operate as a professional studio where apprentices gain valuable industry experience. Mosaic art depends on effective team collaboration, where apprentices learn a variety of approaches from masters in their fields and soon develop their own work methodologies.

Excursions to art studios, galleries, museums and the art library introduce apprentices to the local art & culture scene and provide them with the necessary exposure, adding value to their learning experience.

Current Academy apprentices take pride that they have the opportunity to be educated by international teachers on this specialised course, whilst earning a living. Attending five days a week from 09h00 to 17h00, participants spend a lot of time together developing a wonderful energy of sharing and camaraderie.

The Academy welcomes school leavers who are eager to start their creative careers, as well as more experienced candidates with a creative background wanting to broaden their artistic skillset. Dedicated students with an avid interest in art and a commitment to learn are encouraged to apply at the Academy.
